Analysing Music Videos

Analysing Music videos

In most rock music video's, they will have the band performing outside or in a basement in a house. These are the most common settings for a performance.

In this Blink 182 video, it follows this trend by putting the band in a basement of a house.

In this picture, you can see writing of the bands name and song they are playing. This give the basement more of an atmosphere. Putting the band in a basement makes it more up close and personal especially if its a slow or meaningful song.

Some of the bands have fun videos that tell a story whilst they play in the place that the story is taking place.

This is a capture from the video by Sum 41 - In too deep.

The Video is about the band competing against a professional swim team in a dive off. They are having a laugh in the video and it has its own quirky things that make it a memorable Sum 41 video.

All rock videos are recognisable for all these factors. they make their videos unique and they can sometimes speak to the audience.

Why I Chose The Brief I Did.

I have decided to choose to do the "Promotional Music Package".

Choosing to do the music package was an easy choice to make for me. This is because i have a love for music. i also wanted to challenge myself. i think this would be a challenge for me as u have to be very careful and precise how you edit.

I think i will be having someone lip syncing along to the music. This will be a challenge to get their mouth moving with the words being said on the song. I will also have to make the video fit with the song and genre of music I choose. For example, if I were to do a hip hop style song, you wouldn't expect to see people playing drums and guitars in the video.

I have decided against doing "Children's TV Drama","Short Film/Animation" and "Soap Opera". This is because i have no passion for dramas and soap operas so i think i would become bored very easily and give up on it making my grade lower.

I have decided against doing a short film and animation this year as i did a short film last year and my strengths do not lie in creating animation.

Experiences of AS Media

At the start of my AS level in media back in September 2008, i had little to no understanding of any media language or how to even edit a film. Through out the year, i have gained skills on Macs that helped me to get a film together for my coursework.

My skills when it came to being practical in media, (my crime film) are my organisational skills. i always get what i need when i need it etc. my flaws in this area were getting my group together and filming. There was a period of 2 months where our group never met as one of our group members was unreliable. i could not get to where the filming was taking place so i never knew what had happened with the progress. i had to rely on my 3rd group member a lot to do all the filming.

The program i am confident with using on the Macs is final cut. i have had to use this a lot in my first year so i know a considerable amount on the program. i am not confident in any other programs on the Macs as i have never used them before.

In A2, i plan to work on my own so i always know how far away from my goals i am. i will be able to keep on tracks and edit the filming the way i want it to be filmed. I have learnt from AS that you can never rely on people to always turn up when you need them to. This is why i plan to work on my own this coming year.

In my AS level, i got grade E. This was due to the lack of communication in my group on both our preliminary task and film. i do not yet know my target grade for this year.
