What I Plan To Do For My Video

I am planning on doing a music video for the band Sum 41 for the song "With me". I have chosen to do this song because its a very meaningful piece of music. It is about loving someone and relationships etc.

My video idea consists of two parts. the first part is with the band who are playing the music. i will have them play in a basement or garage area. The second part is focusing on a relationship. the relationship will be good to start off with them at the end will have fallen apart. You will see this by the guy screaming up at the house at the end and her ripping up love letters etc.

With the band sequences, i will have the bass guitarist and the lead guitar and vocalists setting up equipment whilst the drums play at the start. I will have this playing for 10 seconds roughly. Through out the video i will keep going back to the band but to make it look better, i will use different shots of the band. This will be done by having shots of them mid shot and then close ups on their faces and instruments. When night falls in the video, i plan to use lights on just their faces and key areas so it really homes in on the band and not the surrounding.

With the couple, I plan on having them walking along the beach front or walking through parks getting on happily. 10 seconds roughly for each shot of this. The boy will get with another girl and his current girlfriend sees. This is when i plan for her to run back to the where we saw them walking previously. She will run back to her house with the boy behind her. 5 - 10 seconds roughly each shot. Night will then fall in the video. This is where the boy is outside the girls house shouting up at her throwing stones etc. The girl is upstairs ripping up pictures and love letters. fire in the garden of her burning them? I will use various shots of them to show their expression on their faces. through out the whole of the couple sequences, I will slow them down so you can tell whats happening so it doesn't all go by so fast. as it is a slow song it will fit better as well.

End Shots:

  • The end shot for the band will be of them putting down their instruments and walking out of the basement/garage and out of shot.

  • I will have the girl crying as a close up/watching her burning her memories of the boy.

  • I will have the boy sitting on the pavement head in hands/shouting up at the window still.

Analysis of research

During my research, i looked at Sum 41 and blink 182 music videos. This was to see how different they were because even though they are put under the same genre of "Rock", they make different styles so i thought their videos would change too. I also looking at muse, feeder and box car racer album covers to see how they differed as well. These are also very different bands from one another. Muse makes electro sounds where as box car racer are more heavy drums and feeder make very strong and powerful songs yet they are also all under the "Rock" category.

After looking at all of these products, i have found that on all album covers, they don't use their own faces. i think this is to show that they don't care about their image or how famous they are, they simply care about making music which they all clearly love to do. all the albums do have a human representative on them, whether it were a random guy and shadows or a graffiti outline of someone.

Whilst i was looking at the music videos I noticed that in both of them, there was a performance by the band and a story being told. i looked at others but not in as much detail and found that this half performance half story concept is really common in the punk/rock music genre. In nearly all the performances i saw in music videos, i saw that they were all mainly outside in a park or countryside type setting or in a dingy basement type setting with writing all over the walls.

For most of the bands in this genre, their target audience is around 16 years to about 30 years. it can really speak to everyone because it may not seem like it, but, all bands songs tell a story of experiences that everyone can relate to.

For example;
  • Losing a loved one
  • Relationships
  • Breaking up
  • War?
  • Parents arguing
It wouldn't relate to all people in this age range. This is because not every body is the same. People like the stereotypical "Greebo's" and "Emo's" would be listening to rock music or just people who got bought up listening to it like me.

Analysing Music Videos

Analysing Music videos

In most rock music video's, they will have the band performing outside or in a basement in a house. These are the most common settings for a performance.

In this Blink 182 video, it follows this trend by putting the band in a basement of a house.

In this picture, you can see writing of the bands name and song they are playing. This give the basement more of an atmosphere. Putting the band in a basement makes it more up close and personal especially if its a slow or meaningful song.

Some of the bands have fun videos that tell a story whilst they play in the place that the story is taking place.

This is a capture from the video by Sum 41 - In too deep.

The Video is about the band competing against a professional swim team in a dive off. They are having a laugh in the video and it has its own quirky things that make it a memorable Sum 41 video.

All rock videos are recognisable for all these factors. they make their videos unique and they can sometimes speak to the audience.
